Add a Server to the Project
A project level server configuration is checked into the repository, so everyone gets the same tools. Write one.
Validator
IDLE — checks run live as you type commands; submit when done
01Requirements
live checks- Directory ~/project exists○
- File ~/project/.mcp.json exists○
- The file declares the server block○
- The file states how the server is started○
02Walkthrough
4 steps- 01
Create the project directory
The configuration sits at the root of the repository.
mkdir -p ~/project - 02
Write the server configuration
command is how the server starts, args are the arguments it takes. Both are checked into the repository, so they are reviewed like code.
echo '{\n "mcpServers": {\n "issues": {\n "command": "npx",\n "args": ["-y", "@acme/issues-mcp"],\n "env": {"ISSUES_PROJECT": "acme/orders"}\n }\n }\n}' > ~/project/.mcp.json - 03
Verify the configuration
cat prints the file. Check the arguments - a wrong path is the most common reason a server fails to start.
cat ~/project/.mcp.json - 04
Submit for validation
The validator checks the server block, the command and the arguments.
